The latest Horses and Horsemen hobbles are made from high quality Herman Oak leather and lined with latigo leather. These hobbles are adjustanble in size making them suitable for small horses through to clydesdale cross horses. The buckle and ring are made from stainless steel and are large enough to feed the leg strap through without getting jammed. The ring is there to facilitate a rear leg hobble if required and also serves as an attach point when using the hobble as a neck strap for tethering. They are suitable for use above the fetlock joint or below.
WARNING: Horses by nature are claustrophobic. The use of hobbles can trigger defensive reflex in a horse (as can quite a lot of things people do with horses) . The key to success is a good strategy and sound, progressive preparation.
Like any horse training tool these can be used badly. Used well they create handy training and husbandry results.
Without proper preparation and knowledge you could harm your horse or yourself. Unless sure how to use these properly, or without access to good quality strategies for horse and handler preparation, you are best advised to avoid the use of hobbles.
However, when properly applied and trained for, these hobbles are designed to advance even further a horse's training.
For example they can:
- Provide a way of teaching a horse to 'problem solve' in anticipation of restricted situations.
Examples of this include - accidentally ( and potentially tragically) being caught in the fence, foot being held by a person for trimming, the claustrophobia of harness training, where restraint is necessary for medical treatment and so on.
A well trained horse that can handle hobbles can help keep both the horse and visiting medical staff much safer (as against safe) from striking etc. This is part of duty of care for an employer when staff are needed to help with medical situations, and when a crush is not available.
- Remind a (trained) horse not to dig whilst tied up.
- Be joined together with one hobble strap for use as sideline hobbles
- Adjust length by putting the straps through the different rings. Not achievable on some other styles of hobbles.
- Allow a horse to graze locally when camping but be restricted in how far it travels so that you can catch it still after lunch!!. |
